Our ultimate vision for Idlewild is to create a graceful street of remarkable homes that exhibit the timeless elegance of the surrounding neighborhoods that make West Fort Worth such a special place to live. Idlewild presents a rare opportunity because it offers large view lots in the heart of the West Side only two miles from downtown Fort Worth. Its enviable location on the West Fork of the Trinity River allows direct access onto the vast Trinity Trails system and a twenty minute bicycle commute to downtown!

The views in Idlewild are exceptional. The 10 lots on the north side of the street overlook the Trinity with open sight lines up and down the river as far as the tree covered bluffs of the city’s North Side. The 8 southern lots offer views to the beautiful mansion crested hills of Rivercrest and Old Westover—these are particularly striking in autumn color.

Home sites in Idlewild are spacious, averaging just over 15,000 square feet, which is just more than one-third of an acre. Deep front lawns are dictated by 50’ front setbacks in order to maintain an uncrowded scale while promoting front yard activity. To put this into perspective, Idlewild will have a similar feel Crestwood and slightly larger than comparable neighborhoods like Monticello and Park Hill. Deep front lawns

Nothing contributes more profoundly to the beauty of a neighborhood than the quality of the houses that line its streets. Having scoured the country’s finest neighborhoods for inspiration, we are building a diverse collection of meticulously crafted homes which employ only authentic materials and possess the rare virtue of understated elegance. Idlewild Drive will indeed boast some of the most beautiful houses in Fort Worth, Including the 2008 Southern Living Idea House!

The Idlewild Bridge
Bridge was inspired by the enchanting bridges built by legendary landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead and his partner Calvert Vaux. There are a number of bridges in New York’s Central Park which caught our fancy and first inspired us to make an enduring artistic statement, but the red brick elliptical bridge on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, North Carolina was the single greatest source of inspiration.

Street trees
Nothing beautifies a neighborhood and builds value over time like a well implemented street tree program. Idlewild Drive will feature an alee of Red Oaks planted 40 feet apart alongside the curb, designed in time to produce a beautiful canopy of shade and brilliant crimson fall color.

This scene in Vancouver, B.C. demonstrates the powerful long-term impact of a faithfully implemented street tree program. Street trees are the gift that keep on giving!

Hedge rows alongside the street
As with street trees, hedge rows can have a profound impact for beauty when consistently planted along the street’s edge, forming an iconic, place-making element. While the sizes, shapes, and species of street hedges in Idlewild will vary according to each property owner’s taste, they will be maintained at or below a height of 48 inches so that pedestrians and motorists alike may enjoy and admire the beautiful houses.

Hedge Gate in England

Tunnel Hedge in Idlewild

If you’ve driven through Idlewild lately you may have noticed a curiously shaggy looking tunnel-like hedge with a footpath leading to the Trinity River. We call this the Tunnel Hedge. The idea for the Tunnel Hedge originated when I took a trip to England to tour several country houses of the famed British architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, of whom I am a great fan. I was particularly inspired by the elaborate topiary gardens designed by Gertrude Jeckyl, with whom Lutyens often collaborated, and decided we should try something similar in Fort Worth. We wanted to create an original, fun gateway for Idlewild residents to access the Trinity Trails—a place that kids would love--so the Tunnel Hedge seemed like a neat thing to do. Much to my chagrin, English Yew doesn’t do so well here in Texas, so we planted two large Yaupon Holly hedges side by side and are training them into a tunnel. With a little time and TLC this will add some magic to Idlewild.
